Mothbox (Digital Naturalism Laboratories)

Mothbox is an open-source, low-cost insect monitoring system created by Digital Naturalism Laboratories. It is designed for field deployment with lightweight hardware, automated capture schedules, and an analysis workflow that supports AI-assisted insect detection and identification. The project makes hardware designs, electronics, and software openly available so teams can build and adapt units for their own contexts.

For restoration work, this matters because insect communities can provide high-resolution signals about local ecosystem health. A practical and reproducible monitoring setup helps teams compare sites, detect shifts over time, and pair biodiversity observations with other project data. This is especially useful when projects need evidence that is both ecologically meaningful and operationally repeatable in remote conditions.
