How it works

  1. Paste a coordinate in any common format: UTM (for example 17T 630084 4833438), decimal degrees or degrees-minutes-seconds.
  2. The tool works out the format and shows the point as decimal degrees, DMS and UTM, each ready to copy.
  3. The point is placed on the map so you can check it. Click anywhere on the map to get the coordinates of that spot.

Questions

How do I convert UTM coordinates to latitude and longitude?

You need the zone number, the hemisphere or latitude band letter, the easting and the northing, for example 17T 630084 4833438. Paste them into the UTM to Lat/Long Converter and it shows the latitude and longitude in decimal degrees and in degrees-minutes-seconds, with the point on a map.

Does the letter after the UTM zone mean north or south?

It depends on who wrote it. In the standard notation the letter is a latitude band from C to X: C to M are south of the equator and N to X are north, so 18S is band S, in the northern hemisphere. Many people instead write N or S for the hemisphere. The converter shows how it read the letter and lets you switch between north and south.

Why does my UTM coordinate land in the wrong place?

Usually the zone or hemisphere is wrong, or the easting and northing are swapped. The easting is the smaller number (100,000 to 900,000 metres); the northing is the larger one. Check the zone of your GPS or GIS export, and try switching the hemisphere.
