# UTM to Lat/Long Converter

Last updated: 2026-10-19

Convert UTM coordinates to latitude and longitude and back, in decimal degrees, degrees-minutes-seconds or MGRS. Paste one point or a whole list, or click the map.

## How it works

1. Paste a coordinate in any common format: UTM (for example 17T 630084 4833438), MGRS, decimal degrees, degrees-minutes-seconds or a map link. Or paste a list, one point per line, straight from a spreadsheet.
2. The tool works out the format of each line and shows the point as decimal degrees, DMS, decimal minutes, UTM and MGRS. A list downloads as CSV, KML, Shapefile or GeoJSON.
3. The points are placed on the map so you can check them. Click the map, or use your location, to get the coordinates of a spot.

## Input and output

- Input: One coordinate or a list, one per line: UTM, MGRS, decimal degrees, degrees-minutes-seconds, a Google Maps or OpenStreetMap link, or spreadsheet columns. Or a click on the map.
- Output: Each point in decimal degrees, degrees-minutes-seconds, decimal minutes, UTM and MGRS, ready to copy. A list downloads as CSV, KML, Shapefile or GeoJSON.

## Example

Input:

```text
18M 349027 9283255
```

Output:

```text
Read as Zone 18, southern hemisphere
Decimal degrees: -6.482502, -76.365302
Degrees, minutes, seconds: 6°28'57.01"S 76°21'55.09"W
UTM (WGS84): 18M 349027 9283255
```

## Limits

- Everything is on the WGS84 datum; coordinates on a local datum (such as PSAD56 or Arc 1960) aren't shifted.
- UTM and MGRS cover latitudes from 80° south to 84° north. Beyond that the point still shows in decimal degrees and degrees-minutes-seconds.
- Short map links (such as maps.app.goo.gl) hide the coordinates: open the link and paste the full address instead.
- The page link keeps lists up to about 2,000 characters; download longer lists as a file to share them.

## Questions

### How do I convert UTM coordinates to latitude and longitude?

You need the zone number, the hemisphere or latitude band letter, the easting and the northing, for example 17T 630084 4833438. Paste them into the UTM to Lat/Long Converter and it shows the latitude and longitude in decimal degrees and in degrees-minutes-seconds, with the point on a map.

### Does the letter after the UTM zone mean north or south?

It depends on who wrote it. In the standard notation the letter is a latitude band from C to X: C to M are south of the equator and N to X are north, so 18S is band S, in the northern hemisphere. Many people instead write N or S for the hemisphere. The converter shows how it read the letter and lets you switch between north and south.

### Can I convert a list of coordinates at once?

Yes. Paste one coordinate per line, or copy the columns from a spreadsheet: a name column, then latitude and longitude, or zone, easting and northing. Each line can be in a different format. The converter shows every point on the map and lists any line it could not read, with the reason. Download the list as CSV, KML, Shapefile or GeoJSON.

### Why does my UTM coordinate land in the wrong place?

Usually the zone or hemisphere is wrong, or the easting and northing are swapped. The easting is the smaller number (100,000 to 900,000 metres); the northing is the larger one. Check the zone of your GPS or GIS export, and try switching the hemisphere.
