The plantings provide numerous ecological benefits and ecosystems services. The project helps create continuous wildlife corridors from the adjacent native vegetation in the rangelands that reconnect remnant woodlands, facilitating gene flow among isolated populations of small marsupials and ground-dwelling fauna. The multi‐layered canopy and understory structure create essential arboreal habitat for birds, bats and reptiles, while coarse woody debris and leaf litter foster soil biota and enhance nutrient cycling. Deep-rooted mallee trees suppress rising saline groundwater, reducing secondary salinisation on the properties and surrounding farmland. The dense perennial cover cuts wind speeds at ground level, diminishing soil erosion and dust emissions, and fostering a more mesic microclimate under the canopy that supports more moisture‐dependent species. Over the first decade of establishment, soil aggregate stability and organic carbon content recover substantially, restoring soil structure and water infiltration capacity. The plantings contribute towards improved habitat complexity and strengthened ecosystem resilience to drought and fire. The plantings create a healthier, more connected landscape—one that helps sustain biodiversity, stabilises soils, and maintains vital ecosystem functions.
The primary social benefits from the project are related to the provision of employment opportunities related to the establishment of the plantings and subsequent maintenance and utilisation of the planting area. Dozens of people are involved in the establishment of the plants through site preparation and the hand planting of the seedlings. Subsequent local employment is provided for maintenance activities associated with the plantings, such as fire management, maintenance of fences and management of feral animals and weeds. Ongoing seed picking from the plantings will also occur on the properties providing an ongoing source of income for local businesses. The goal is to hand back land to Traditional Owners in all situations for them to help care for Country during the projects’ 100 year permanence period.
