The agroforestry systems will also help to restore degraded land and improve soil health, while providing valuable ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, water filtration, and pollination. Reforestation of these areas will improve water yields and retain water for longer periods of time, which will be a major benefit for the surrounding communities. The reforestation project will also help to protect the cultural heritage of the communities living in and around the Gunung Niut and Gunung Naning areas, by ensuring that they can sustainably use forest resources.
This project is designed to establish agroforestry systems that will provide sustained livelihoods and nutrition security to partner communities, while also contributing to restoring degraded land and providing valuable ecosystem services. The project will focus on providing training and support for local communities, such as developing supply chains for high-value fruits, setting up stingless bee apiaries, and establishing a weaving cooperative. These activities will bridge the knowledge gap and support the creation of regenerative and resilient agroforestry systems that can better withstand ecological and anthropogenic shocks. Ultimately, this project will not only bring economic benefits to partner communities, but will also contribute to a more sustainable, resilient, and regenerative environment.
