Magallanes Juban Forest Reserve is home to the rare Philippine eagle, Philippine brown deer, Palawan bearcat, and a variety of other wildlife.
In response to the low forest cover, DENR has launched a reforestation initiative in Sorsogon, targeting the Bulusan Volcano Natural Park and the Magallanes Juban Forest Reserve. The project will involve the planting of native trees in the two areas, which will contribute immensely to the regeneration of secondary growth forests. This will increase native tree diversity in the area, restore watersheds, prevent soil erosion and increase carbon sequestration, thus helping to mitigate climate change. In addition, the project will also help protect endangered species living in the two areas, as well as maintain the ecosystem balance.
This project provides a number of beneficial job opportunities and activities for local farmers and farm workers. It creates 3,000 jobs that will provide much needed income and stability to the community. To ensure access to nutrition and local goods, food gardening is established in buffer zones that will provide 1,000 families access to locally grown vegetables and root crops. Additionally, five community-based enterprises are developed to process forest products, creating income for 100 women. These enterprises also contribute to the strengthening of five local associations of farmers and women. This project will have a lasting and positive effect on the community, providing jobs, access to nutrition, and support for local businesses.
