Coastal tree planting provides natural protection against waves, sea-level rise, and erosion, stabilizing shoreline sediments and improving water quality. Mangroves also absorb CO₂, playing a key role in climate stabilization and oxygen production. The North Sumatra coastline is rich in marine biodiversity, and restored mangrove forests will enhance fish habitats, ensuring a balanced ecosystem. By strengthening natural defenses, this initiative helps preserve coastal and marine ecosystems.
Ten community groups will establish ten nurseries, each producing 10,000 seedlings, and receive training in site selection, seed collection, nursery operations, out-planting, maintenance, and monitoring. Restored coastal forests increase fishery yields, benefiting shrimp, crab, and fish populations. The project also supports coastal ecotourism and women’s groups in developing beach fruit-based food and beverages, strengthening local economies and sustainable livelihoods.
