This project is an important conservation effort in South Australia to restore the habitat of the Southern Hairy Nosed Wombat (Lasiorhinus latifrons), which is listed as Near Threatened under the EPBC Act. The project will also help to improve the landscape connectivity and provide important habitat for numerous other threatened species. The project is expected to result in a significant increase in native vegetation, which will support multiple species, as well as improve the overall biodiversity of the Yorke Peninsula. In addition, the project will help to restore the landscape to a more natural state, providing benefits to the local community and environment. The project will also provide a great opportunity for local schools and community groups to engage in habitat restoration activities. Overall, this project is an important conservation effort to help protect and restore habitat for numerous threatened species, while also providing a great way for the local community to become involved in conservation.
This project is providing opportunities for local Narungga people to restore the health of Country. Funding from this project is also helping to establish the Point Pearce Aboriginal Corporation’s Ranger program. The community will be involved with the design of the program and contribute to how they would like to see it progress – for example, expanding to include seed collection for future revegetation projects, as well undertaking ongoing maintenance and monitoring activities. Restoration of this land will support the local community by providing employment opportunities in areas such as tourism, vegetation management, and pest management. In addition, the project will focus on educating the local community about the importance of regenerating the land and protecting the environment.
