Beyond its clear climate change benefits, a key advantage of this project is the significant increase in biodiversity compared to the previous wind-thrown spruce monoculture. By planting a mix of suitable species, the initiative creates a diverse coniferous-deciduous forest. Diversifying the forest composition contributes to improved pest resistance, resilience to climate fluctuations, and overall ecosystem health. Annual monitoring will provide valuable data on the potential increase in biodiversity within the planted forest. Key indicator species for the area include Brown Bear (Ursus arctos), Red Deer (Cervus elaphus), Eurasian Lynx (Lynx lynx), and Eurasian Pygmy Owl (Glaucidum passerinum). The resulting ecosystem will be more productive, supporting a larger wildlife population, including the Eurasian brown bear. Addressing human-bear conflict due to foraging in low-productivity forests is a major regional challenge. By creating a food-rich habitat, this project contributes to mitigating this issue by keeping bear populations within the forest.
Immediate community benefits include the involvement of local residents and workers in planting, ongoing management, and monitoring activities. The community will also reap rewards from the reforestation through improved erosion control, water management, and other ecosystem services. The area's reputation has been damaged by widespread wind-throw, deterring tourists. For landowners, the most significant benefit is increased land value through the establishment of a biodiverse forest with higher commercial potential compared to the previous wind-damaged spruce monoculture. Moreover, the project is expected to enhance ecosystem services such as erosion control, flood prevention, and mitigation of human-wildlife conflicts (e.g., brown bear). Additionally, locals, particularly schoolchildren and university students, will benefit from educational and recreational programs organized around the planting events. For university students, involvement in planting and monitoring offers valuable practical experience and career development opportunities.
