The primary ecological benefits of the project reside in the carbon removal of over 500,000 tons of CO2 as a result of planting in mostly deforested and degraded land. Additionally, the strategic selection of river systems and watershed areas will result in hundreds of hectares of soil erosion mitigation in a region plagued by flood-related landslides.
The community benefits are linked to our project's participants, namely indigenous populations of Mindanao. There are 7 "tribes" in Mindanao, which control roughly 40% of the land area of the island of Mindanao. Mindanao is the poorest region of the Philippines, and within Mindanao, the Indigenous Populations are recognized as the most disenfranchised of Mindanao's population. The project will result in revenue and income across the bamboo value chain, from the collection of bamboo grow materials "propagules" to growing plants in nursery, to paying jobs for planting, maintenance and geotagging. Ultimately, participating planters can expect to find a ready market from the $70Billion global market for bamboo materials.
Additionally, special attention is paid to facilitating the entry of indigenous women into the bamboo economy.
