This ambitious multi-year project will re-establish native forests on public lands. This project includes the management of multiple resources, such as riparian areas which will be planted to benefit fisheries and watersheds, and Late Successional Reserves (LSR), which will accelerate the return to the ecologic conditions that were present before the fires. The targeted species mix for the project will represent what was historically present, and planting will be implemented and maintained to prevent the establishment of any invasive species.
The re-establishment of native forests on public lands will have a positive impact on surrounding communities. These projects will create employment opportunities during the initial reforestation effort and continued maintenance thereafter. Moreover, local communities will benefit from the restoration of recreational opportunities that were historically associated with their surrounding forests. In addition, the reforestation of these lands can help to improve air quality, reduce erosion, and provide habitat for wildlife. Overall, the re-establishment of native forests will help to improve the quality of life in the surrounding communities while also providing a source of income.
